The distance between Delhi to Haridwar is around 210 km from ISBT Sarai Kale Khan Delhi.

  1. Start At Sarai kale Khan ISBT and drive on NH-24 through Nizamuddin Bridge, Vinod Nagar to Gazipur Border.
  2. From red light at UP border, take a left turn and reach Mohan Nagar T point via Dabur.
  3. Take NH 58 and reach Muradnagar. Then via Modi Nagar, Muzzafar Nagar, Khatauli, reach Purkaji-Manglor, from there Uttarakhand border starts.
  4. Continue on NH 58 to Roorkee, famous for IIT Roorkee, Roorkee College of Engineering & Roorkee Cantt.
  5. Go Straight on NH 58 Haridwar Road to reach the holy city of Haridwar.

Haridwar In Mahabharata

Haridwar has been mentioned in the Vanaparva chapter of Mahabharat, where Sage Dhaumya tells Yudhisthir about the ‘Tirth’ (pilgrimages) of India, including Haridwar.It is also believed that King Bhagiratha did Tap to get Ganga down to purify the souls of his 'Purvaj' (ancestors) in the Satya Yuga.

In regular history, Haridwar was under Maurya Empire (322-185 BC) and then Kushana Empire (1st to 3rd centuries).

Haridwar In Medieval Period

Chinese traveler Huan Tsang mentions Haridwar as ‘Mo Yu Lo’ in his travel of India in 629 AD. Haridwar is also mentioned in the 16th century ‘Ain-e-Akbari’ as Mayapuri. However The first written evidence of the name Haridwar comes by Thomas Coryant.

Haridwar In British Rule

In British Rule, two major dams were created- Bhimgoda Dam in 1840. The first railway track in Haridwar was laid down in 1886. Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalay came in 1902. Industrial development took place in haridwar with setting of BHEL Plant with township in 1960s. It laid to the foundation of Industrial Area Haridwar and SIDCUL recently.

Haridwar came under a newly formed state of Uttarakhand in 2000. Earlier it was in Uttar Pradesh.

Haridwar District covering an area of about 2360 km², is situated at height of 249.7 m from the sea level between Shivalik Range in the North and Northeast and Ganges River in the South. Haridwar is also the first town at which Ganges falls from the mountains to touch the plain. There are many other small streams flowing that are seasonal. A large part of the ares is under forest cover. One can easily go to nearest Wildlife National Park- Rajaji National Part and Also see the Cheela hydro power plant. This national park is famous for wild elephants.

Weather of Haridwar

Haridwar City has the temperature similar to that of Delhi, that is extreme climate. The winters are very cold and summers are hot. However situated on the river bank and proximity to Shivalik range, the temperature is not that much unbearable as in Delhi. The maximum temperature goes up to 40 ºC in summers and in winters, the temperature falls down to 16 ºC in winters. The average rainfall throughout the year is around 2315.4 mm.

Har Ki Pauri at haridwar was constructed by King Vikramaditya in memory of his brother Bhrithari. The most important ghat within Har ki Pauri is Brahmakund. A majority of present ghats were largely developed in the 1800s.

The evening Aarti at dusk offered to Goddess Ganga at Har-Ki-Pauri is an enchanting experience for all the devotees. A spectacle of sound and colour is seen when, after the ceremony, pilgrims float diyas and incense on the river, praying for their deceased ancestors.

The ghat of har ki paudi is regarded the most sacred and auspicious point to bathe in the Ganga during the Kumbh held after 12 years and Ardh Kumbh after 6 years.

Millions of people from all round the world do make a point to attend the evening prayer along with the holy dip on their visit to Haridwar.

One can easily reach there by taking a rickshaw or a vikram that will drop you at har ki pauri. Try to negotiate with the driver as they over charge heavily.

Mansa Devi Temple, dedicated to Ma Mansa Devi is one of the popular and most visited temples in Northern India. It is situated at the top of Bilwa Parvat in the holy city of Haridwar, Uttarakhand. It has a great religious significance as it is one of the Sidhpeeth. This ancient temple is dedicated to Ma Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti (Power). The term 'Mansa' means 'wish' and its a belief that the devi fulfills all the wishes of all the sincere devotes that come with their wishes.

One can reach Mansa Devi Temple by 2 ways-

1. By the walking route through staircase and the road. The walking route is tiring but can be quite enjoyable if we go in a group. People can be seen chanting prayers going in groups, which fill bhakti in all the devotees of ma mansa devi.

2. By Trollies- Udhankhatola. The full length of the ropeway is 540 meters and the height it covers is, 178 meters. A journey towards the temple in these Udhankhatolas is excellent as one can see the Haridwar city while the trolley moves towards the hill i.e., Mansa Devi temple.

According to old traditions and beliefs, the devotees usually tie threads on a holy tree that is located in the vicinity of the temple requesting and praying the Goddess to fulfill their wishes. On the fulfillment of the wishes, the people come to untie the thread from the same tree once again.

This temple along with the nearby located Chandi Devi temple is visited by thousands of devotees from various parts of the country, and especially during the Navratra and the Kumbha Mela in Haridwar.

Chandi Devi Haridwar

Chandi Devi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Chandi Devi is situated on the Neel Parvat at a height of 2,900 metres (9,500 ft) on the Eastern side of the Sivalik Hills in Haridwar. Ma Chandi Devi Temple was built in 1929 by Suchat Singh- The King of Kashmir. However, the main moorti of Ma Chandi Devi in the temple is believed to have been installed in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya. The Chandi Devi Temple is one of the Panch Tirth (Five Pilgrimages) located within Haridwar. Chandi Devi Temple is highly seen by devotees as a Siddh Peeth like Mansa Devi Temple, which is a place of worship where desires get fulfilled. It is one of three such Peethas located in Haridwar, the other two being Mansa Devi Temple and Maya Devi Temple.

How to Reach Chandi Devi Temple
  1. Take the 3 km trekking route from Chandighat and reach the shrine by climbing the steps or by walking on the road.
  2. Take the Trollies/ rope-way service- Chandi Devi Udankhatola from the lower station to the Chandi Devi Temple.
There is a dense forest on the other side of the hill. The trekking route is what I personally like as one can spend more time with the beauty of Hills there. The ropeway too offers beautiful scenic views of the Ganges and The Haridwar City.

Travel Tips- Kindly dont feed the monkeys on the route. Never carry nonveg, alcoholic drink or any leather stuff to the temple as they are prohibited.

Maya Devi & Other Places To Visit In Haridwar


Maya Devi Temple, Haridwar

Maya Devi is one of the Siddhapeeths of Haridwar along with Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temple. It is believed that the heart and navel of Goddess Sati fell at the place where the temple is built. It was build in 11th century. Goddess Maya Devi, the Adhisthatri deity of Haridwar, is known to be an incarnation of power or shakti. Haridwar was previously known as Mayapuri in reverence to this deity.

Daksheswara Mahadev, Haridwar

Daksheswara Mahadev Temple is in the town of Kankhal, Haridwar. The present temple was built by Queen Dhankaur in 1810 AD and rebuilt in 1962. It is named after King Daksha Prajapati.

Neel Dhara

Neel Dhara Bird Sanctuary is situated on the Ganga river- Neel Dhara, at the Bhimgoda barrage. It is a home to many migratory birds during the winter season and thus a paradise for bird lovers.

Bhimgoda Tank

Bhimgoda Tank is situated about 1 km from Har ki Pauri. It is believed that while Pandavas were going to Himalayas through Haridwar, Bhima drew water from the rocks here by thrusting his knee (goda), at the ground.

Bharat Mata Mandir

Bharat Mata Mandir is a multi-storey temple, dedicated to Bharat Mata, Mother India, with each floor depicting an era in the Indian History, from the days of Ramayan till India's independence.
